    PROSPECTIVE SECONDARY MATHEMATICS TEACHERS’ PERCEPTION ON COMPETENCY OF GENERAL TEACHER BEHAVIORS

    The aim of this study is to describe the perception on competency of the prospective secondary mathematics teachers in terms of general teacher behaviors. The sample consisted of 104 prospective teachers who were about to graduate. The data for the study were collected through “Prospective Teacher Competency Scale” including 5 dimensions and 43 items with a Likert-type grading. The five dimensions were 1) subject matter, 2) designing, planning, and administering instruction, 3) assessment and evaluation, 4) cooperation with others concerned, 5) professional development. As a result of this study, it was observed that prospective secondary mathematics teachers had a "fairly" level of proficiency perception in terms of general teaching behaviors.  Article visualizations

    PROSPECTIVE MATHEMATICS TEACHERS’ ABILITY TO IDENTIFY MISTAKES RELATED TO ANGLE CONCEPT OF SIXTH GRADE STUDENTS

    In the present study we try to highlight prospective mathematics teachers’ ability to identify mistakes of sixth grade students related to angle concept. And also an examination of prospective mathematics teachers conceptions of angle. Study was carried out with 30 sixth-grade students and 38 prospective mathematics teachers. Sixth grade students required to define the concept of angle with their own statements and describe what it brought to their minds by writing their responses on a paper.  Students written responses were examined by the researchers and students’ mistakes in their definitions were determined. A data collection form that included students’ definitions of angle (correct, partly correct, incorrect) was obtained. Prospective teachers were required to define the concept of angle with their own statements and evaluate whether sixth grade students’ responses were correct by explaining the reasons in written form. The data obtained from written forms of prospective teachers were analysed through the descriptive analysis technique. Candidate's' comments they have made in response to each student are coded. The results of the research show that prospective mathematics teachers didn’t have problems in determining students' definitions of angle as correct, incorrect or partially correct. But they have problems about expressing the students’ failures and to clearly identifying the mistakes in the incorrect definitions of students. Additionally, almost all of the candidates have made only the static definition of the angle concept.  Article visualizations

    Associations between Emotional Eating and Metabolic Risk Factors at Adolescents with Obesity

    Purpose: This study aimed to determine whether emotional eating (EE) and uncontrolled eating (UCE) scores affect the metabolic risk factors in obese adolescents.Methods: A sample of 100 adolescents have BMI-SDS between 1.41 and 2.83 (aged 12-17 years) was selected. EE and UCE scores were estimated using the TFEQ21. The association of EE and UCE with anthropometric data, lipid profile, glucose profile, liver enzymes, and inflammation factors was assessed in boys and girls.Results: Using Spearman rank correlation, EE scores significantly correlated with uric acid (r = 0.393 and P = 0.001), CRP (r = 0.273 and P = 0.017), TG (r = 0.317 and P = 0.001), TC (r = 0.258 and P = 0.019) and VAI (r = 0.276 and P = 0.034). Also UCE scores were showed positive correlation with CRP (r = 0.257 and P = 0.024).Conclusion: In conclusion, interrelationships tend to exist between EE and triglyceride, uric acid, visceral adiposity index, and CRP levels among obese adolescents

    Perinatal outcomes of the antenatally diagnosed omphalocele cases: a single tertiary center experience

    Objectives: To evaluate the perinatal outcomes of antenatally diagnosed omphalocele cases. Material and methods: This was a retrospective study conducted between July 2014 and February 2020 at the prenatal diagnosis center of a university clinic. Gestational week of diagnosis, associated anomalies, karyotype analysis results, complications during pregnancy, termination/delivery characteristics, and postnatal results were evaluated. Results: The analysis was performed on 58 patients. The median diagnosis time was 14.5 weeks of gestation. Thirty-three cases (57%) were defined in the first trimester. 33 (57%) of 58 patients had one or more concomitant anomalies, while 25 patients (43%) had isolated omphalocele. The most common associated anomaly was a cardiac anomaly which was observed in 17 fetuses (30% of all omphalocele cases). Karyotype analysis was performed in forty-five patients (41 in the prenatal period, 4 in the postnatal period). A normal karyotype was detected in 27 cases (60%). Trisomy 18 was the most common chromosomal anomaly (n = 15, 33.3%). Thirty of 58 patients (52%) requested termination of pregnancy (TOP) in the early pregnancy period. Thirteen of the cases died in-utero (22%). Fifteen pregnancies resulted in live births (26%), of those eight were lost in the first year of life (six of them had additional anomalies, while two of them had isolated omphalocele but the omphalocele pouch was containing the liver in those two babies). Conclusions: Most of the cases with an omphalocele can be diagnosed in the first trimester. Cardiac anomalies were the most common associated anomalies, while trisomy 18 is the most common chromosomal anomaly. Thus, earlier and effective counseling can be made about the prognosis of pregnancy

    Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements

    Genome-wide identification and phenotypic characterization of seizure-associated copy number variations in 741,075 individuals

    Copy number variants (CNV) are established risk factors for neurodevelopmental disorders with seizures or epilepsy. With the hypothesis that seizure disorders share genetic risk factors, we pooled CNV data from 10,590 individuals with seizure disorders, 16,109 individuals with clinically validated epilepsy, and 492,324 population controls and identified 25 genome-wide significant loci, 22 of which are novel for seizure disorders, such as deletions at 1p36.33, 1q44, 2p21-p16.3, 3q29, 8p23.3-p23.2, 9p24.3, 10q26.3, 15q11.2, 15q12-q13.1, 16p12.2, 17q21.31, duplications at 2q13, 9q34.3, 16p13.3, 17q12, 19p13.3, 20q13.33, and reciprocal CNVs at 16p11.2, and 22q11.21. Using genetic data from additional 248,751 individuals with 23 neuropsychiatric phenotypes, we explored the pleiotropy of these 25 loci. Finally, in a subset of individuals with epilepsy and detailed clinical data available, we performed phenome-wide association analyses between individual CNVs and clinical annotations categorized through the Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO). For six CNVs, we identified 19 significant associations with specific HPO terms and generated, for all CNVs, phenotype signatures across 17 clinical categories relevant for epileptologists. This is the most comprehensive investigation of CNVs in epilepsy and related seizure disorders, with potential implications for clinical practice
